Alameda de Cervantes

The Alameda de Cervantes, popularly known as "La Dehesa", is the garden par excellence of the city of Soria, not only for its location in the very center of the city, where hundreds and hundreds of species of vegetation coexist, but also for its high cultural and landscape value.

In addition, it is one of the oldest public gardens in Spain and Europe.

It is the most important green area in the city and the true green lung of the urban area. The park is located in the center of the city, in front of the Plaza de Mariano Granados and next to the Paseo del Espolón.

The first news that refers to "La Dehesa" appears at the beginning of the 12th century, when after Soria was consolidated as an urban nucleus, in 1126 the abbot of the Monastery of San Millán de la Cogolla, Fray Pedro, made a "pressure" of a pasture to "feed the livestock of the community outside the city."

There is also documentary news of a church with the invocation of San Andrés that, together with that of Santa María de Tera, was the subject of a long dispute between the bishop of Osma and the abbot of San Millán, which occurred in 1166, in which the Oxomense maintained that It was his property because it was in his bishopric, while the Emilian claimed that it had been founded by Abbot Pedro. However, the authors do not agree on whether they actually refer to this church or to another located, next to the one mentioned, in Tera. Whether it is true or not, for centuries this pasture was called Dehesa de San Andrés until in 1905, on the third centenary of the publication of Don Quixote, the name was changed to Alameda de Cervantes.

The big changes in the garden were made in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1930 the Dehesa undergoes a strong remodeling; More than 1500 trees were planted and the esplanade "del alto" was no longer used as a boyal pasture for cattle and later a windmill with a pond to irrigate was built, which is now gone. The lower part with gardens, bustling promenades and the “La Rosaleda” enclosure was designed and built after the Civil War in the 1940s at the same time as the restoration of the Fuente del Campo.

In 1945 the new entrance to the park was made from Mariano Granados and between 1947 and 1950 the park was closed as we know it today.
