Casa Ferrán

The Ferrán home in Teruel, Spain, at 4 Calle Nueva, was the Tarragona architect Pablo Monguió's first entirely modernist construction there. It was completed in 1910. The boundaries of the site are provided by the streets Nueva, Laureano, and El Salvador, the wall that separates them at calle Nueva No. 2, and a little home that is incorporated into the landscape. The entire site is covered by the built volume, which has seven storeys: a basement, a ground floor, a mezzanine for businesses, three upper floors, and a ground floor for residences.

While the centre body of the upper floors and ground floor, with a yellow rendered finish, shows a greater compositional variety, the uniform treatment of the ground levels and the crown reinforces the complex's unity from the outside. The two sections of the façade that face c/ Nueva have different solutions, while the ground floor and upper two levels have comparable compositions. The placement of the three distinctive components on the right side of the elevation—the bay window, the top element, and the oculus of the doorway—balances the composition. The largest chamfered bay window on the left, which highlights the corner and is the most important feature of the building, stands out. The building's other two façades are more plainly constructed.

The beauty and dynamism of the entire ensemble's modernist ornamentation, which was primarily inspired by plants and sinuous forms and in which the wrought iron and cast iron work stand out, is what makes it unique. The marble wainscot, coffered ceiling, and enclosure of the doorway, vestibule gate, and stairs, on the other hand, are significant features of the interior. The commercial space has undergone transformation, but some of the original interesting aspects have been preserved, maintaining the space's spirit.

The Ferrán home is a reflection of a very particular historical period, that of Teruel at the start of the 20th century, as well as of a new bourgeois social class with a very particular mentality and artistic preferences, which Pablo Monguió was able to express well in this instance.
