Lorca Castle

The Castle of Lorca is a medieval fortress built between the 9th and 15th centuries.

It comprises a series of defensive structures that, during the Middle Ages, turned the city and its fortress into an impregnable point in the southeast of the peninsula.

The castle of Lorca was a key bastion in the conflicts between Christians and Muslims on the border of Granada.

Due to its extension, 640 meters long by 120 meters at its widest point, it is one of the largest castles in Spain.

The archaeological works carried out on different occasions in the castle demonstrate the uninterrupted settlement of the hill on which it is based since the Chalcolithic.

The archaeological excavations carried out in the same between 1999 and 2001, together with those carried out in different areas of the urban area, demonstrated the existence of a large Argaric town (Bronze Age) that extended under the castle and the current city of Lorca. Of this Argaric town, burials, houses and even the foundations of the wall that protected it under the urban area of the current city were documented.

Once the Bronze Age wall has been documented, it is very difficult to guess when a defensive bastion existed for the first time on the Castle hill. The first written news of a castle on the hill of Lorca come from Muslim sources that, as early as the 9th century AD, cite the city of Lurqa as one of the most important in the Cora de Tudmir.

The beginning of the 19th century will see the revitalization of the castle on the occasion of the War of Independence from Spain. Many of its walls and dependencies will be repaired; in other cases, modifications will be made that will completely change its medieval appearance, such as the battery that was built to beat the Murviedro area with artillery, or the stables below it.
