Tamarit Castle

The castle of Tamarit, of Romanesque style, is located on a promontory on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in the municipality of Tarragona.

It is surrounded by the old medieval center of Tamarit, which formed a small village around the castle of which very little remains.

The wall was opened by four gates, of which two are preserved, La Mora and La Cruz.

The construction of the castle dates from the 11th century and it belonged to the county of Barcelona and was transferred to the House of Claramunt, lords of the Castle of Claramunt who maintained this lordship until the 13th century. The lords of Claramunt, specifically Bernardo Amat de Claramunt, was the first viscount of Tarragona, lord of Tamarit (which he reconquered), Ullastret, Altafulla and de la Riera de Gaia. All of them titles and lordships granted by Ramón Berenguer I, count of Barcelona.

In the fourteenth century, when the wall was built, it passed into the hands of the archbishopric of Tarragona, which it kept until the nineteenth century, although in the seventeenth century it had to share the lordship with the Montserrat family, when in 1681 Carlos II granted Francisco de Montserrat the title of first Marquis of Tamarit. At this time the wall was rebuilt and the main tower was built, achieving the current structure.

In 1916, the Archbishop of Tarragona sold the place to the North American magnate Charles Deering, who carried out a romantic restoration by Ramón Casas and Joan Ruiz. Romanesque and Gothic elements are preserved. In 1992, the Deering family sold the property to the Catalan Sociedad Inmobiliaria Betren, S.A.

During the Civil War, a FAI band tried to burn the church and its splendid baroque altarpiece, as they did with the Altafulla and many others, but someone alerted them that the owner was the American Charles Deering, patron of Ramón Casas and Santiago Rusiñol, as well as founder in 1910 of the Maricel Museum, in Sitges. With this, the anarchist brigade gave up its incendiary purpose.
