Faro de San Telmo

The San Telmo lighthouse is a maritime lighthouse located on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea.

It is a white quadrangular tower with a black stripe, adorned on one of its walls with the indalo, symbol of the province of Almería, and integrated within the old castle of San Telmo. The castle was built in 1772 as a defensive bastion of the port, equipped with four cannons, and was restored during the 19th century after suffering extensive damage during the Spanish War of Independence.

Castle and lighthouse are located at the top of the promontory of the same name, just over 70 metres above sea level, giving it unsurpassed views of the bay and port of Almería. In 1861 approval was given for the installation of a provisional light, which was installed three years later. In 1882 a mobile lighthouse was built, which was approved the following year.

Around 1900, projects were presented to extend the port to the west, specifically with the construction of a loading dock in the vicinity of this lighthouse, as well as different warehouses, although this was never carried out.
