Casa de la Calle Mercado Viejo

The Casa de la Calle Mercado Viejo is a building in Ciudad Real, Spain. It is designated as a Cultural Interest Asset.

It is situated on the corner of Feria Street and Mercado Viejo Street, in the city of Ciudad Real, Castilla-La Mancha. It is structurally and decoratively similar to the house next door, and both could be considered representative of early 20th century architecture in Ciudad Real, somewhere between eclecticism and neo-historicism.

The decorative play is centred on the bichrome between the red brick and the bluish-colored tile, which is another detail of industrial architecture with strong historicist connotations that could, in this case, reflect Islamic traditions. The overall composition is more rich than in the other house because it is symmetrically structured with two very different red brick bodies at the two corners that connect with other buildings and two other central bodies, decorated with tiles and separated from each other by an angle pilaster also in red brick at the intersection of the two streets.

The two side sections, which were originally supposed to be the same (the one on Calle Feria has a different ground floor), each have a simple semicircular arched doorway on the ground floor, separated from the first floor by a line of geometric imposts. On this floor, there is a twinned window with a neo-Medievalist feel, set in stone and supported by a decoration of the same brick but with a relief-based play of light and shadow. The first floor has a porthole opening behind another impost, and the final finishing touch is a cornice on which rests a segmental arch that raises the rest of the façade on both sides. The remaining two parts of the building are symmetrically structured in three storeys on both sides of the corner pilaster, this time without a division of imposts between them.

The ground floor had been extensively converted into commercial space by 1991, with an unsatisfactory ceramic decoration. The first floor has a continuous balcony with two openings formed by semicircular arches with alfiz and pediment on each front, and the top floor is lit by simple windows. The entire central section of the building is decorated with a plain blue-colored tile background.

It was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest on November 26, 1991, with the category of monument, in a resolution published on December 18, 1991, in the Official Gazette of Castile-La Mancha.
