Sta. Cristina de Ribas de Sil Monastery

The Benedictine monastery of Santa Cristina de Ribas de Sil is a Catholic monastery complex, now in disuse. A Romanesque jewel of the Ribeira Sacra, it is located on the banks of the river Sil. It belonged to the Order of Saint Benedict and dates back to the 10th century.

It preserves in all its purity the architectural elements of its first Romanesque construction, especially in the church and bell tower and the layout of the monastic quarters, as well as the later 16th century Renaissance paintings on the altar.

It was first an independent monastery and, after the 16th century reform, it remained as a priory dependent on the Benedictine monastery of Santo Estevo, from that period we owe its half Renaissance cloister.

Today it has been restored without altering its essence in any way, despite the devastation and ruin caused by the disentailment of Mendizábal in the 19th century.

It is located in one of the meanders that the river Sil forms as it borders Monte Varona, on a peninsula covered by an old and leafy chestnut forest. It is undoubtedly one of the magical places in Ribeira Sacra.
