Palacio Espicopal

The Episcopal Palace is a structure in Cuenca, Spain, that houses the Diocesan Museum.

The Episcopal Palace was built in 1250 in houses given to Bishop Mateo Reinal by the Cathedral Chapter. Some Arabic inscriptions and a plasterwork-decorated door remain from those houses, which were most likely originally Muslim.

The Court of the Inquisition was established in the palace at the end of the 15th century and remained there until 1530. Bishop Diego Ramrez decided to remodel the palace in 1535. He hired Pedro de Alviz, who designed the palace and arranged the rooms around a central courtyard. Alonso de León, the carpenter, was in charge of all carpentry and masonry work.

The courtyard of the palace, which is in excellent condition, has a square floor plan with three Gothic arches on each side and a curved section in the Catholic Monarch style on the ground floor. A gallery on the upper floor replicates the openings, with bell-shaped arches resting on Ionic columns. The coat of arms of Diego Ramrez can be found throughout the building. There was another, single-story courtyard directly in front of this main courtyard, which could be entered from the outside. Two Plateresque doors contrast with the 17th-century one in the hallway: cushioned and decorated with pyramids and balls.

The front courtyard was extensively remodelled at the beginning of the 18th century. The bay that faces the main façade and leads to the transept was expanded. The façade is exceptionally classical in its overall layout and opening decoration. The main courtyard was enclosed in 1781, and the ceiling of one of the main floor halls, located in the south wing, was decorated with a small dome, the pendentives of which are decorated with relief eagles.
