Plaza Zorrilla is a central square in the city of Valladolid that constitutes the starting point of one of the main arteries of the city: Paseo Zorrilla.
In addition, four other important streets of Valladolid converge in the square: Calle de Santiago, Calle Miguel Íscar, Acera de Recoletos and Calle de María de Molina.
From Plaza Zorrilla you can access the Parque del Campo Grande.
The square has an area of 6410 square meters and a length of 93 meters.
For centuries, Plaza Zorrilla was called Puerta del Campo and it encompassed, in addition to the current plaza, almost the entire Campo Grande.
The name of Puerta del Campo refers to a door that was located at the confluence of Santiago and Claudio Moyano streets, being one of those that limited the city on its southern side, from the end of the 13th century to the first third of the 17th century.
A varied activity took place on the land in front of the Puerta del Campo. During the Middle Ages, honor duels and military exhibitions took place, and it also witnessed warlike episodes such as the one that took place in 1464 when the Merino mayor of Valladolid, Alonso Niño, defended in favor of Enrique IV of Castile, «the door and tower of the Puerta del Campo ».
It also constituted a common space for walks, entertainment and games.
The executions of the prisoners of the Inquisition, the military justice and the ordinary also took place in this place.
