Teatro Jovellanos

The Jovellanos Theatre is a theatre located on Paseo de Begoña, although it was originally built on nearby Calle Jovellanos.

The first Jovellanos Theatre was located in the space now occupied by the Municipal Library, and was inaugurated in 1853. It was demolished in 1934. At the same time, in July 1899, the Dindurra Theatre was inaugurated on the site of the current Jovellanos Theatre (whose café is still in operation next to the theatre) after the surname of its founder, Manuel Sánchez Dindurra. Construction began due to the demands of an evolving town and following the appropriate plans of an eminent architect of the time, Mariano Marín. In this early period, zarzuelas, operettas, symphony orchestras, variety shows and masquerades, as well as theatre, were commonplace.

During the Civil War it was seized by the Control de Espectáculos Públicos de la República, and political acts and plays and shows related to the Republican cause were performed there until it was reduced to rubble in 1937 during a bombing raid. The theatre was rebuilt between 1938 and 1942, opening as the Teatro Jovellanos. After several decades in operation, it was refurbished in 1995, and in 2010 it underwent a new restoration with changes to the stalls and the stage box. It is currently one of the national public venues with the best infrastructures and which offers more programming throughout the twelve months of the year. It is a regular venue for numerous shows, as well as one of the venues for the Princess of Asturias Awards and the venue for the ceremony of the Gijón Film Festival.
