Cathedral of Teruel

The cathedral of Santa María de Mediavilla in Teruel is one of the most characteristic Mudejar constructions in Spain, and one of the few Spanish cathedrals, along with that of Tarazona, built in this style.

The cathedral is currently considered a BIC (Bien de Interés Cultural). It was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument belonging to the National Artistic Treasure by decree of 3 June 1931.

The tower, the roof and the dome have been World Heritage Sites since 1986.

Teruel Cathedral has its origins in the church of Santa María de Mediavilla, which began to be built in Romanesque style in 1171 and was completed with the erection of the Mudejar tower in 1257. In the second half of the 13th century, the Moorish master builder Juzaff restructured the old Romanesque work and endowed the building with three Mudejar naves of masonry and brick, which improved and raised the 12th century Romanesque structure.

In the same Gothic-Mudejar style, the Romanesque apses were replaced by others in the 14th century, as can be seen in the chevet of the main chapel. The number of supports was reduced by half, which made the naves with their pointed arches brighter and more spacious. The walls were also rebuilt. In 1423, with the Mudejar appearance with which we know the church today, the Aragonese pontiff Benedict XIII, the so-called "Papa Luna", elevated it to the rank of collegiate church.

In the Plateresque-Mudejar style, the dome of the central nave was built in 1538, the work of Martín de Montalbán. It was built with an octagonal floor plan on trumpets and has mullioned windows with Plateresque decorations on the outside. Later, in 1587, with the creation of the diocese of Teruel, it was promoted to Cathedral and consecrated as such. Finally, in 1909, the building of the façade in neo-Mudejar style was undertaken, the work of Pablo Monguió.
