Museo de Zaragoza

The Museum of Zaragoza is a state-owned museum whose management has been transferred to the Autonomous Community of Aragon, located in the Plaza de los Sitios in the capital. It is the most extensive and representative museum centre in the whole of Aragon. Its collections summarise history from prehistoric times to the 20th century: Antiquity, Early Middle Ages, Renaissance, Gothic, Baroque, Goya and his time, 19th and 20th centuries. This wide variety is completed with unique collections of oriental art, ceramics and ethnology.

The extensive collection of the Museum of Zaragoza began in 1836 with the funds of the disentailment of Mendizábal and has been increasing through the different legally established channels: purchases, donations, deposits and, most notably, as a result of excavations and archaeological surveys.

It is the oldest museum in the Aragonese capital and the main building (which houses the Archaeology and Fine Arts sections) is located in a neo-Renaissance building constructed for the Spanish-French Exhibition of 1908 by the architects Ricardo Magdalena and Julio Bravo. Its design is inspired by the Patio de la Infanta, the former home of the wealthy Aragonese merchant and Renaissance patron Gabriel Zaporta.

The other museum buildings are the Casa Pirenaica and the Casa de Albarracín in the city's José Antonio Labordeta Park - which reproduce typical models of the popular architecture of these areas - built by Alejandro Allanegui in 1956. These buildings house the ethnology and ceramics sections respectively. A final section houses the finds from the Colonia Celsa archaeological site and is located in a functional architectural building in Velilla de Ebro.
