Parque Moret

Huelva, is home to a lovely urban park called Parque Moret. Because of its central location and status as a genuine urban wilderness, it ranks among the capital's most important landmarks.

Spanning a total area of around 72 hectares, it is Andalusia's largest urban park and is split into three distinct sections:

The park is located on the old road to the Sanctuary of La Cinta and is surrounded by the neighbourhoods of Los Cabezos del Conquero, which borders the neighbourhood of Marismas del Odiel and features the ruins of a Roman aqueduct, the south-eastern neighbourhood full of old orchards, some of which are still in use, and the park itself.

Living things, plant and animal

Forest species typical to the Huelva coast can be found here, along with clay hills and waterways lined with orchards and fruit trees. In total, over 400 species have been identified, the vast majority of which are found along the coast or in the Mediterranean.
Heritage from the past

There are four Bronze Age 4 burial mounds and walls used for executions during Franco's persecution in the park.

Both of these archaeological locations have been designated as Sites of Cultural Interest within the park.

For fun and games
The park features recreational amenities such as a lake, BBQ pits, and a skate park.

It was decided that a park should be constructed on one of the edges of the road, on the right-hand side, so that the people of Huelva, particularly on their days of leisure or during the summer, could enjoy the natural beauty and that which could be achieved along the Paseo de la Cinta, which links the city centre of the capital with the Sanctuary of Our Lady, following a chapter agreement of 2 March 1901.

An agreement with Don Claudio Saavedra Martnez's heirs was approved in session on December 3rd, 1909, "on the purchase for the Municipality of an orchard of his property called del Italiano, of more than 4 hectares, 68 areas, and 98 centimetres, with a house, well, and others that form part of the said property," with the price not to exceed 25,000 pesetas as determined by the municipal architect.

In the latter days of December 1909, city officials gave the green light to begin clearing the park's future site. The land purchase was approved at a chapter meeting on January 6, 1910, and a motion was passed asking that the new park be named Moret in honour of Segismundo Moret, the government's head of state at the time.

A sign at the park's entry said, "This land was acquired by the Huelva City Council, by virtue of the chapter agreement of 3 December of the aforementioned year, with Francisco Garca Morales as Mayor, under the authority of the Royal Centralising Decree of 15 November 1909.

Starting in 1909, the Huelva City Council began laying out the land to be used as an urban park, and it quickly rose to prominence as a popular place for Huelva residents to spend their free time, only to fall into disuse by the 1960s.

On January 20, 1910, the feast of Saint Sebastian, patron saint of the city of Huelva, the mayor of Huelva, Mr. Garca Morales, took possession of the new park on behalf of the Municipality of Huelva, saying he was "satisfied at being able to offer the neighbourhood this place of recreation" and that he was leaving it "in the custody of the people, the first interested in its development and expansion." At the conclusion of the ceremony, the municipal band played a curated set for the assembled dignitaries and citizens.

On July 29, 1936, rebel troops entered the capital and executed people in several locations around the city, including on the walls of the cemeteries in San Sebastián and La Soledad, which still have the marks of bullet holes. Next to Moret Park is the Conquero esplanade, which was the final shooting area for numerous assassinations of high-ranking military and civilian officials.

New infrastructures, including amusement parks for kids, a man-made lake, and picnic spots, were erected in 2006 as part of the City Council's effort to reclaim the space for the capital.

In 2008, a second entrance, this one on Avenida de Santa Marta, joined the primary one on Avenida de La Cinta.

Huelva's city council pledged 1.5 million euros in August 2020 to upgrade Parque Moret's infrastructure.
