Antiquarium

The Antiquarium is a museum space inside the ruins of Pompeii. Its construction dates back to 1861, but unfortunately, in 1943, it was severely damaged by heavy bombing during World War II. Subsequently, in 1948, its reconstruction was carried out following modern museological principles, with the purpose of providing a comprehensive view of the history of the city.

This space is composed of four rooms: the first room exhibits testimonies of Pompeii before the Samnite influence, with a special focus on materials from the Iron Age necropolis (11th to 7th centuries BC) in the Sarno Valley. The second room houses objects from the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, including terracotta, Etruscan ceramics and tufa sculptures. The third and fourth rooms present items from Pompeii's Roman period, ranging from plaster casts of people and animals caught in the eruption, to objects of daily life and evidence of commercial activity in the city.
