The Champs Elysées is the main avenue of Paris. Measuring 1910 metres long by 70 metres wide, it runs from the Place de la Concorde to the Place Charles de Gaulle where the Arc de Triomphe is located.
It is an extremely well known avenue in Paris, mainly for its theatres, cafes and luxury goods shops, for the annual military parade for the anniversary of the national day and the military parade of the Bastilles; and since 1975, it is where the final finish line of the Tour de France has been located.
In France it is traditionally known as "the most beautiful avenue in the world".
The name Champs Elysées comes from Greek mythology, where it designated the abode of dead heroes reserved for virtuous souls, the equivalent of the Christian paradise. To reach it, they had to drink from the river Lethe, which would make them forget their passage through hell.
