Galicia Culture City is an architectural complex designed by Peter Eisenman that is located in Santiago de Compostela.

Erected on the top of Mount Gaiás, the complex is made up of several buildings and spaces oriented to cultural and entertainment issues.

Its construction was halted at the end of March 2013, so that two of the projected buildings, an "Opera House" and an "International Art Center", were never finished.

The construction project of the City of Culture began in 1999, when the Xunta de Galicia called an international architecture competition to carry out the construction on Mount Gaiás, located in Santiago de Compostela.

Initially, twelve proposals from important architectural teams, both national and international, were submitted to the contest. After the withdrawal of Santiago Calatrava's project, eleven remained.

Once all the proposals had been evaluated, the architectural design of Eisenman Architects was chosen as the final project, according to the award, due to its uniqueness, both conceptual and plastic, and its exceptional harmony with the place.

Eisenman's project recreates a new peak on Mount Gaiás. It is a stone crust reminiscent of an archaeological site divided by natural cuts that evoke the motif of the scallop, a traditional symbol of Compostela. The shell arises from a surface that presents simultaneously smooth and striated conditions.

The complex, projected on Mount Gaiás, merged with the terrain of that mountain, configuring an urbanism from figure to figure, in which all the buildings and the topography are everything. Eisenman's proposal constitutes a cultural acropolis on a hill that invites pilgrims to knowledge.

Construction work on the complex began in 2001, two years after the call for the tender.

The Princes of Asturias inaugurated the Library and the Archive, the first two buildings of the City of Culture of Galicia, in January 2011.
