Dolmen a Casa Dos Mouros

The Casa dos Mouros dolmen is a megalithic monument located in Candeán, in the municipality of Vigo, and was built between the end of the 5th millennium BC and the end of the 3rd millennium BC. These are Neolithic remains, linked to the megalithic culture that developed in Galicia three or four millennia BC. This dolmen is catalogued as one of the best preserved and largest, as it is the largest megalithic monument in the area and is considered an Asset of Cultural Interest.

The name "Casa dos Mouros" comes from a Galician mythological being (the Mouro), whose existence is almost always linked to these millenary stones and to other historical and legendary places throughout Galicia.

The dolmen is made up of five orthostats (vertical slabs) that form the walls of the monument and the roof, which is supported on one of the slabs. These stones form the polygon, weigh tons and are about two metres high. The chamber is about three metres long and two metres wide.

They are the discovered remains of the tomb of a Neolithic burial, since the stones were originally and in the past covered by a small mound of earth, which is what is known in Galician as a "mámoa". Even so, the voracity of the treasure hunters who came to the place guided by the stories and legends that told of the appearance of great riches, led to the mámoas being "desecrated" and plundered, taking with them the little that was found of value and destroying any possible evidence of burial that might have survived to the present day. In addition, all these discoveries are evidence of human occupation in these areas since ancient times.
