Virgen Peregrina Church

The church of the Pilgrim Virgin is a religious building located in the city of Pontevedra. It consists of a scallop-shaped chapel that is located at the foot of the Camino de Santiago Portugues.

Construction began in 1778 and it is one of the most symbolic and relevant buildings in the City of Pontevedra. It is dedicated to the Virgin who, according to tradition, guided the pilgrims from Bayonne to Santiago.

The church houses the image of the Virgin of the Pilgrim (19th century), patron of the province of Pontevedra and, in turn, of the Portuguese Way.

Declared a historical-artistic monument in 1982, it mixes a late Baroque with neoclassical forms, such as its main altarpiece, erected in 1789.

The shape of its plant is inspired by a scallop shell, the quintessential symbol of pilgrims, with a cross ending. This circular shape is associated with the prevailing typology in the Portuguese temples of the time.
