The lupanar was the most prominent brothel among the numerous brothels found in Pompeii, and was the only one built specifically for that purpose.

The prostitutes who worked there were slaves of Greek or Oriental origin, and the price of their services ranged from two to eight aces. It is worth mentioning that a glass of wine cost one ace, but the proceeds of the services went to the owner of the brothel.

This brothel was a small building located at the intersection of two secondary streets. It was built on two floors: the first floor was intended for slaves or people of lower social classes. It had a corridor and five rooms equipped with beds, and the walls were decorated with paintings depicting various erotic positions.

Access to the upper floor was through a separate entrance that led to a staircase and then to a balcony. From there, there was access to larger and more luxuriously decorated rooms than those on the first floor. This upper floor was reserved for a more affluent clientele.

This construction dates from the last period of the city and presents walls decorated with erotic motifs from its main entrance, which shows a representation of Priapus with two virile limbs held in his hands.
