Located in the heart of the historic centre of Almería, this pioneering multidisciplinary space in the city is an Andalusian reference in the production, promotion and exhibition centre of contemporary art, founded by Fernando Barrionuevo, artist and curator, in 1989.
MECA Mediterráneo Centro Artístico organises multidisciplinary exhibitions in different art spaces and museums, as well as its own art centre, which it combines with literary and musical events, workshops and various performances.
Its mission is based on improving the foundations of contemporary artistic culture and to this end it has an extensive catalogue of national and international programmes and projects that take the form of exhibitions, international biennials of contemporary art, city projects, educational workshops, training, learning and education activities, cooperation and networking meetings, congresses, art fairs and symposiums.
Their values are based on solid principles such as quality, protection, public recognition and tolerance. In this sense, they put into practice a hard work of continuous promotion of new artistic tendencies, support to young values, diffusion of professional artists, continuous training in education both in the arts and in the development of strategies, collaboration with public and private entities and very specifically the promotion of artistic internationalisation.
MECA has coordinated international Contemporary Art programmes in countries such as France, Belgium, Japan, Brazil, Oman, Argentina, USA (New York and Miami), China, Portugal and Italy.
In its eagerness to actively promote the most emerging art and to encourage educational processes to promote contemporary artistic culture, MECA Mediterráneo Centro Artístico collaborates on a permanent basis with different educational centres, schools and faculties of Fine Arts.
MECA offers, among others, art coaching and strategic consultancy services for the creative cultural sector as well as having its own laboratory of ideas and innovative practices in the artistic sector.
MECA Mediterráneo Centro Artístico has its own publishing project, TqPlusArt, which contributes to enriching the artistic and intellectual heritage of the community.
