Estadio Centenario

The Centenario Stadium, located in the Parque Batlle neighborhood of Montevideo, Uruguay, is an emblematic sports venue of great national and international relevance. With a capacity for 60,235 people, it is the largest stadium in Uruguay and one of the most important in the Americas. In 1983, FIFA declared it a World Football Historical Monument, making it the only construction of its kind in the world.

This stadium has hosted several important sporting events, such as the 1930 World Cup, the Copa America in various editions and the Intercontinental Cup, among others. In addition, it is the regular home of the Uruguayan national soccer team, which plays its home games there, and has also been home to clubs such as Peñarol and Nacional at different times.

Inaugurated on July 18, 1930, its construction was a historic milestone, as it was erected in a record time of only nine months by immigrant workers. Its name celebrates the 100 years of the country's first Constitution. Although in its early days some World Cup matches were played in other stadiums due to the rains that delayed its completion, the Centenario Stadium has been the scene of numerous international competitions and finals, consolidating itself as a symbol of world soccer.

The stadium has several grandstands, such as the Tribuna América, the Tribuna Olímpica and the popular Tribunas Colombes and Amsterdam, all with different spectator capacities. The Tribute Tower, a 100-meter-high structure, is one of the most distinctive elements of the stadium and is used as a lookout point. This tower was designed by architect Juan Scasso, who endowed it with national symbols, such as the balconies representing the stripes of the Uruguayan flag.

Inside the stadium, there is also the Uruguayan Football Museum, inaugurated in 1975, which houses a vast collection of memorabilia of the most important moments of Uruguayan and world soccer. In addition, the stadium has facilities such as a school under the Olympic grandstand. Throughout its history, the Centenario Stadium has witnessed some of the most glorious moments of soccer and continues to be a point of reference for the sport in Uruguay.
