Parque del Prado

The Prado Park, located in Montevideo, Uruguay, is an extensive green space that covers 102 hectares and crosses the Miguelete Stream, offering a natural respite in the middle of the city. This park is located in the Prado neighborhood, bounded by important streets such as Camino Castro, Avenida Agraciada, Lucas Obes, Camino Carlos María de Pena, Avenida Buschental, Atilio Pelossi and 19 de Abril.

Its history begins in 1872, when the Quinta del Buen Retiro, which belonged to José Buschental, was auctioned and transformed into the first public park in Montevideo. Since then, it has been an important meeting and recreation point for the city's inhabitants. Among the most outstanding elements of the park are the Rosedal del Prado, one of the main attractions, the Buschental Chalet and the Hotel del Prado, as well as the Isla de los Cipreses, a haven of tranquility. The park also houses the pavilions of the Rural Association of Uruguay and a series of monuments, among which stand out The stagecoach of José Belloni and The last charrúas, work of Edmundo Prati, Gervasio Furest Muñoz and Enrique Lussich.

Within its boundaries, the Prado Park houses the Professor Atilio Lombardo Museum and Botanical Garden, along with a municipal nursery and a gardening school. At the botanical level, the park is especially valuable for the diversity of plant species it houses, some of which have been declared plant monuments. Some unique specimens stand out, such as the Jubaea chilensis, known as the Chilean coconut, large araucarias, and the hybrid of butia and pindó called Butiagrus nabonandi.

The connectivity of the park with the rest of the city is excellent, since a large number of bus lines cross it, such as lines 181, 183, 149, 149, 185, 306, 522 and 538, facilitating access to this green lung of Montevideo.
