The Portillo de la Lealtad is an access to the first walled enclosure of the city of Zamora.
The gate is located between the church of San Isidoro and the Cathedral.
It is in a perfect state of conservation and hygiene, as well as decoration, as it is surrounded by abundant vegetation that makes a place with so much history even more romantic.
The importance of this architectural element lies in the fact that the chronicles say that Vellido Dolfos, a nobleman from Leon from the 11th century, entered through it, being persecuted by the Cid. This persecuted him for having assassinated Sancho II of Castile, who was in command of the hosts that besieged the city, who maintained his fidelity to the Kingdom of León.
Historians disagree about the existence of this fact. A group of professionals affirm that yes, that it is reflected in the chronicles and that therefore it does not admit discussion. However, others claim that the king was killed by an anonymous soldier who did not even know that he was committing a regicide. In any case, the Castilian tradition collects this fact through various songs of deed and romances.
The Portillo de la Lealtad originally had the name of Puerta de la Traición, which it maintained until December 22, 2010, at which time an act of redenomination was institutionally formalized chaired by the mayor of Zamora, Rosa Valdeón, in which the read a text of redress against Vellido Dolfos, praising his figure, and discovering a plaque making the change official.
