The Selarón Staircase, also known as Escadaria de Santa Tereza, is a staircase located in the Santa Teresa neighborhood, near the convent of the same name, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Its international fame is due to the unique decoration made by the Chilean artist Jorge Selarón, who began this project in 1990 and kept it in constant renovation.

Selarón described his work as "alive and constantly changing". The staircase, which measures 125 meters and has 215 steps, is completely covered with ceramics of various colors, shapes and sizes, some with drawings.

Located at the corner of Teotônio Regadas and Joaquim Silva, the staircase is on Manoel Carneiro Street and ends next to the church and convent of Santa Tereza. In addition, Selarón left other mosaics near the Arcos de Lapa.

Jorge Selarón, born in Limache, Chile, in 1947, traveled the world and visited some fifty countries before settling in Rio de Janeiro in 1990, where he began to decorate the staircase that bears his name. According to the artist himself, he interrupted his work only when he lacked materials, financing his work with the sale of his paintings, mostly of pregnant women. He emphasized that his technique, based on the constant substitution of tiles, gave the work a special energy, with more than two thousand unique tiles from more than sixty countries.

On January 10, 2013, Jorge Selarón was found lifeless on his famous staircase.

The Selarón Staircase has been the subject of numerous publications in magazines such as National Geographic, Time and Elle Decoration, and has appeared in television programs in several countries. It has also been the backdrop for commercials for brands such as American Express and Pepsi, as well as music videos for well-known artists such as U2, Wisin y Yandel, and Snoop Dogg. It also appears in the movie The Incredible Hulk, in a scene where actor Edward Norton descends the staircase.
