Between the Royal Palace, Calle de Bailén, and the Cuesta de San Vicente, in the northern section. They were developed in the 1930s and include massive French style gardens. Since this is where the stables that this architect constructed for the Palace were located, they are known as the Sabatini gardens. Some of the Spanish king statues that were meant to embellish the Royal Palace are positioned around a pond that is part of these gardens. In between the walkways, a number of fountains are arranged in a geometric arrangement.

This and other royal family property was seized by the Republican government and given to the Madrid City Council so that a public park could be constructed. Fernando Garca Mercadal, an architect from Zaragoza who won the competition, was given the project. The grounds were refurbished and the grand stairs were constructed in 1972.
