It is made up of pieces from the 15th century and later and is regarded as one of the best in the world together with the Vienna Imperial. The championship pieces created for Charles V and Philip II by the top master armorers of Milan and Augsburg are among the highlights. The entire suit of armor and the weapons that Emperor Charles V wore at the Battle of Mühlberg and that Titian depicted him wielding in his well-known equestrian picture in the Prado Museum are among the most spectacular items. During the Spanish Civil War and the War for Independence, some of the arsenal was destroyed. Nevertheless, the armory is home to some of the most significant works of this art in Europe and the entire globe, including several that are autographed by Filippo Negroli, one of the most illustrious artisans in the guild.
