The Cathedral-Basilica of Santa María

The Cathedral-Basilica of Santa María in Palma (Mallorca) also called the Cathedral of Mallorca is the main religious building on the island of Mallorca. It consists of a Levantine Gothic style temple built on the shore of the bay of Palma.

It overlooks the sea on the Roman and Renaissance walls that protected the city, being the only Gothic cathedral that meets this peculiarity. It also consists of the headquarters of the diocese of Mallorca, its owner is the Assumption of Mary.

This is the cathedral with the largest rose window in the Gothic world, the largest original rose window of all the European Gothic cathedrals (13 meters in diameter), since there are cathedrals with larger rose windows (15m) but they belong to the Neo-Gothic, and also one of those with the highest nave among the European Gothic cathedrals.

The building is huge, its vault reaches a height of 45 m only surpassed by the Cathedral of Beauvais 48 m, the highest Gothic cathedral in the world and slightly less than the height of the Cathedral of Milan 45 m, instead it exceeds the Cathedral from Cologne 43 m. The building covers 6655 m². The interior volume is 160000 m³.

Its construction began in 1229, after the conquest of the island by the Crown of Aragon. King Jaime I, decided to demolish the old great mosque of Medina Mayurqa to build a great temple dedicated to Santa María, because when a strong storm exploded during the sea crossing to Majorca to conquer it, he promised to build a cathedral in veneration if this saved them from death.

The works and finishes continued for many years, since it was not finished until 1601, and, strictly speaking, it continued (and continues) to reform and restore every little time.

It began to be built by the front, around the year 1300, on the place occupied by the Arabian mosque of Madîna Mayûrqa, which was demolishing as the works of the new building progressed, until it was finished being demolished in the year 1386 .

The first architect of the project was Ponç des Coll, who began by building the Chapel of the Trinity. Ponç was followed by Jaime Fabre, architect also of the Church of Santo Domingo de Palma and the Cathedral of Barcelona. Later, between the years 1314 and 1327, the current Royal Chapel was built, after having widened the Plaza del Mirador towards the sea.

In the middle of the 14th century, the work was continued with the construction of the three naves. It is believed that part of the material used came from the cove of Portals Vells, from where they extracted blocks by drilling huge caves in a cliff, which were transported by boat to Palma.
