The Roman circus of Tarraco is a Roman building preserved in present-day Tarragona.
It was built politically driven by the Concilium Provinciae Hispaniae Citerioris, the annual meeting of the representatives of the Citerior province, and was located very close to the Provincial Forum of Tarraco, within the walled enclosure on the lower terrace of the Upper Part of the city of Tarraco, capital of the province Hispania Citerior Tarraconensis.
It was built at the end of the 1st century AD. by the mandate of the Roman Emperor Domitian.
The circus ludi were held here, mainly horse races.
The circus remained in use until the middle of the 5th century, when the arena and the perimeter vaults were transformed into new residential spaces because the city was reduced in size and concentrated in the "upper part" due to the increasing instability of the Empire. Roman, occupying the old facilities of the provincial forum and the circus.
Later the original structures were used as support for the new constructions, so that the circus ended up being embedded in the very urban center of Tarragona, which curiously made it possible that it is probably the best preserved in the world.
The part of the eastern head is preserved and can be visited, where the porta trifalis and a good part of the stands are located.
In addition, several of the inner circles of the circus can be visited, which supported the upper stands, whose preserved dimension is also a record over the other preserved Roman circuses. In many cases, these tours go deep into the heart of the old town.
