We welcome you to the majestic Cathedral of Lisbon, located in the historic parish of Sé, which has its origins in the creation of the parish in the year 1150. This sacred place has a deep connection with the history of the city, as it was established shortly after the conquest of Lisbon in 1147 by Afonso Henriques.
The cathedral, also known as the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, is a symbol of Lisbon's rich architectural heritage, representing Visigothic and Moorish elements. It was built on the foundations of an ancient mosque, ordered to be demolished by Afonso Henriques after the conquest. More recently, vestiges of this mosque, dated between the 9th and 10th centuries, have been discovered in the cloister garden, dating back to the time of D. Dinis.
Over the centuries, the cathedral has witnessed important historical events and has undergone several modifications and restorations. In 1393, D. João elevated it to the rank of metropolitan cathedral, consolidating its religious importance in the region.
It is important to note that the parish of Sé was suppressed in 2012, as part of an administrative reorganization, merging with other parishes to form the new parish of Santa Maria Maior. Despite these changes, the Lisbon Cathedral remains a cultural and spiritual reference point in the city.
We invite you to explore this venerable monument, marvel at its impressive architecture and immerse yourself in its fascinating history - enjoy your visit to the Lisbon Cathedral!
