Praça do Comércio

Praça do Comércio, also known as Terreiro do Paço, has a rich history dating back centuries. In 1511, D. Manuel I decided to move his residence from St. George's Castle to this place by the Tagus River. Here was erected the magnificent Royal Palace of Lisbon, which unfortunately was destroyed by the devastating Lisbon Earthquake in 1755. However, the reconstruction of the square became an integral part of the plans of the Marquis of Pombal, who shaped the current appearance of the square and its surrounding buildings.

One of the most outstanding features of Praça do Comércio is its imposing triumphal arch, the Arco Triunfal da Rua Augusta, which marks the entrance to Baixa. In the center of the square, stands the equestrian statue of D. José I, a masterpiece created by Machado de Castro in 1775. Over the years, this bronze statue has acquired a beautiful green hue, adding charm and character to the square.

However, the history of this square is also marked by momentous events. On February 1, 1908, the square witnessed the tragic assassination of King Charles and his son Louis-Philippe. Later, on April 25, 1974, Praça do Comércio was the scene of the Carnation Revolution, an event that marked the end of the dictatorial regime in Portugal in a peaceful and moving manner.

Since then, this vast space has been used for a variety of purposes, from cultural events and shows to religious celebrations. On May 11, 2010, the square came alive once again when Pope Benedict XVI celebrated mass during his apostolic trip to Portugal.

By visiting Praça do Comércio, you can admire not only its grandiose architecture and historical monuments, but also reflect on the significant events that have taken place here over the centuries. Enjoy your time in this iconic Lisbon square!
