Elevador de Santa Justa

Welcome to the Santa Justa Elevator, an iconic attraction in Lisbon that connects the Baixa Pombalina and Chiado neighborhoods!

This impressive elevator, also known as Elevador do Carmo, rises majestically above Santa Justa street, linking this lively promenade to Praza do Carmo, near the Museu Arqueológico do Carmo.

The history of this elevator dates back to the early 20th century, when it was designed by Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard, who was also involved in the construction of the Elevador do Lavra in Lisbon. Although there has been speculation about a possible connection with the famous Gustave Eiffel, the truth is that Mesnier and the French architect Louis Reynaud applied innovative techniques and materials in the construction of these elevators, inspired by their work in France.

The construction of the Santa Justa Elevator began in 1900 and was completed in 1902, being inaugurated on July 10 of the same year. Initially, it operated with steam, but was later modernized with electric motors in 1907.

With an impressive height of 45 meters, this all-iron metallic structure stands out for its neo-Gothic design, with unique details on each of its levels. Inside, two wood-clad elevators can transport up to 24 people each. In addition, the helical staircase leading to the top level leads to a charming terrace, from where you can enjoy panoramic views of the city, including the imposing St. George's Castle and the lively Rossio Square.

Although it no longer fulfills its original function as a means of transportation, the Santa Justa Elevator remains a must-see tourist attraction in Lisbon. As you explore the city, you will notice that this elevator differs from other Lisbon elevators, such as the Elevador da Glória, the Elevador da Bica and the Elevador do Lavra, as it is the only one configured as a vertical urban elevator.

Don't miss the opportunity to experience the beauty and history of the Elevador de Santa Justa during your visit to Lisbon!
