Convento do Carmo

The Convent of the Order of Carmel is a historical jewel located in the parish of Santa Maria Maggiore, in the heart of Lisbon, Portugal.

This former Catholic convent has a fascinating history dating back to 1389, when it was founded by Constable Nuno Álvares Pereira, on land acquired by his sister Beatriz Pereira and Admiral Pessanha. The reconstruction of the convent began in 1393 and in a short time it became an important religious and cultural center in Portugal.

Unfortunately, the convent and the Gothic church of Nossa Senhora Senhora do Carmo were severely damaged during the Lisbon earthquake of 1755. Although much of the monastery was rebuilt in the 19th century, the church was never restored and remains in ruins to this day, a vivid reminder of that tragic event.

Over the centuries, the convent has had different uses, from being occupied by the Royal Police Guard in the 19th century to serving as the headquarters of the Republican Guard during the 20th century. Today, the former convent houses the Museu Arqueológico do Carmo, founded in 1864 by the Association of Portuguese Archaeologists.

The Museo Arqueológico do Carmo is the country's first museum of art and archaeology, and its collection includes a wide variety of historical artifacts, from funerary monuments to tile panels and archaeological artifacts from different periods. It is a fascinating place to explore and immerse yourself in Portugal's rich history and culture.

Don't miss the opportunity to visit this impressive historical site during your stay in Lisbon - enjoy your visit to the Convent of the Order of Carmen and the Museo Arqueológico do Carmo!
