Puerta del Puente

The Gate of the Bridge is one of only three historic gates that remain in the city of Cordoba, together with the Gate of Almodovar and the Gate of Seville. Built in the 16th century in Renaissance style to commemorate the celebration of the Cortes by the monarch Philip II in the city, the current gate is located in an enclave where Roman gates were once located, linking the city with the Roman bridge and the Via Augusta, as well as Muslim ones.

Since 1931, the gate, together with the Roman bridge and the Calahorra tower, has been declared an Asset of Cultural Interest in the category of monument and is part of the historic centre of Cordoba, which has been declared a World Heritage Site.

The Gateway of the Bridge consists of high bases supported by Doric fluted columns that support a classical entablature with triglyphs and metopes. Above the lintel of the gate there is an inscription referring to King Philip II's visit to Cordoba in 1570.
