Syntagma Square, named after the Constitution imposed on King Otto I of Greece on September 3, 1843 in the Old Royal Palace (now the parliamentary seat), is located in Athens, the Greek capital. At its highest point, the square houses the parliament and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, adorned with a moving relief of a dying hoplite soldier. This square, inaugurated on March 25, 1932 during the "Independence Day", has the constant presence of the National Guard (évzones), dressed in their recognizable uniforms of fustanela and clogs.
The surrounding walls display bronze shields commemorating military victories since 1821. Over time, Syntagma Square has been the scene of numerous protest demonstrations against the austerity measures implemented by the Greek government in response to the economic crisis affecting the country since 2010.
