In the Dutch city of Amsterdam, there is a 47 hectare public park called the Vondelpark. West of Leidseplein and Museumplein, it is a part of Amsterdam-Zuid district. The park was established in 1865 and was known as the "Nieuwe Park," but it was later renamed "Vondelpark" in honour of the author Joost van den Vondel, who lived in the 17th century. Every year, the park receives about 10 million visitors. A children's playground, an outdoor theatre, and numerous food options are all located inside the park.
With the money from the acquisition of an eight-hectare block of land, a committee headed by Christiaan Pieter van Eeghen established a public park in 1864, and J.D. Zocher was hired to design it. On June 15, 1865, the park officially opened to the public. The park's popularity prompted the acquisition of additional land, and in 1877 it had grown to its present size of 47 hectares.
