Palacio municipal de La Coruña

The municipal palace of La Coruña is the town hall of the town hall of the Spanish city of La Coruña.

It was a project by the municipal architect Pedro Mariño, who employed a bombastic eclectic style, evocative, according to Ramón Otero Pedrayo, of the «dominant taste of exhibition or grand hotel of the last century».

The work, which incorporates three domes, ended around 1914 in terms of the completion of the exterior appearance. In 1917 the consistory decided to move to its new headquarters.

It is located in the Plaza de María Pita, the nerve center of the city.

The outline is completed with the statue of María Pita, who presides over the square looking towards the town hall. Its realization and placement in the square took place in 1998.

María Pita, was a heroine of the defense of A Coruña against the Invincible English. On May 3, 1589, the English troops arrived in A Coruña, led by the admiral and former privateer Sir Francis Drake.

Legend has it that the English, having surrounded the city, opened a breach in the wall and began the assault on the old city. During it, they killed Gregorio de Rocamunde, María Pita's husband; She, full of rage, snatches the spear from the English flag and, with it, kills the ensign leading the assault. He was the brother of Admiral Francis Drake. This demoralized the English troops, made up of twelve thousand troops and caused their withdrawal.
