Hortus Botanicus

Hortus Botanicus Amsterdam, often known as the Amsterdam Botanical Garden in Dutch, is a 1.2 acre privately run nonprofit botanical garden in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.

It belongs to the BGCI. AMD is both the institution's herbarium's abbreviation and its international institution identification code for botanical institutions.

This botanical garden, which was established in 1638 by the city council to serve as a herb garden for the treatments of physicians and apothecaries, is one of the oldest in the entire globe. More than 6,000 tropical and native trees and plants can be found there.

The Hortus Botanicus's first collection was put together in the 17th century from seeds and plants brought by East India Company (VOC) traders for trade and medical purposes. All coffee varieties in Central and South America were descended from a single coffee plant, Coffea arabica, in the Hortus collection.

Similarly, two potted oil palms sent by the VOC from the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius produced seeds after six years, which spread throughout Southeast Asia and eventually became the main source of income in the Dutch East Indies and currently in Indonesia.

Hugo de Vries oversaw the garden from 1885 until 1918.

The enormous palm house, which was built in 1912, is well known across the world for its collection of cycads.

A coalition of individual supporters saved the garden from closure in 1987 when the University of Amsterdam stopped covering its expenses. Today, the Amsterdam City Council also supports the Hortus Botanicus. Two other venues in the garden are available for gatherings and celebrations.

Three distinct tropical biotopes are housed in a sizable hot house that was recently added to the garden.

About 6,000 live plant accessions and 4,000 cultivated taxa are kept in his botanical garden.

The following are some of its collections, like the Arecaceae family of plants, therapeutic plants and herbs or Orchids.

The Hortus has recently undergone improvements, including the development of a sizable "hot house" that features three various tropical climates.
