Monumentos a una democracia, 1988 (Sala 2)

As he approached the end of his artistic activity, Mateos, who never hid his strong political convictions, wanted to pay homage to freedom and democratic values. With this series, called "Monuments for a Democracy", Mateos's sculpture becomes a direct monumental proposal.

To this end, he necessarily recovers verticality, with planes that emerge from a base and envelop a common space, serving in turn to support the knot that establishes the union and meeting of these planes, as a symbol of the world of ideas.

This is the last series in which he will use concrete formwork, and also the last series conceived by the sculptor, since in this last stage, marked by a self-marginalisation born of years of disappointment, Ángel Mateos was focused on conceiving his last great project, the museum that would house his works.
