The Cathedral of Santa Maria della Fiore, also known as the Metropolitan Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria del Fiore, is the seat of the Archbishop of Florence, Italy. It was constructed in the early Renaissance style and is considered a masterpiece of Italian Renaissance architecture.
The Florentine cathedral is one of the greatest buildings in Christendom and a symbol of the richness and power of the Tuscan city in the 13th and 14th centuries. The name may be a reference to the lily, the city's official flower, or to the city's original name, Fiorenza. The "flower" is Christ, according to a source from the 15th century.
The grandiose dome, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi1, stands out for being an isostatic structure that cancels out horizontal thrusts so that it practically transmits no loads to the drum that supports it other than the vertical ones corresponding to its own weight. It measures 100 meters in height on the inside and 114.5 meters on the outside. In addition to the dome, there is the baptistery of St. John, which features the renowned bronze doors constructed by Ghiberti, and Giotto's campanile, a freestanding bell tower that stands at 84.70 m in height. The church, bell tower, and baptistery make up one of Florence's architectural and artistic crown jewels.
Since 1982, the basilica has been recognized as a cultural treasure by UNESCO. The Sagrada Familia's primary sculptor, the Japanese artist Etsuro Sotoo, who has made 500 sculptures for the basilica, had his ambo unveiled and dedicated by Pope Francis in 2015.
